Unlike many of the muscle cars, the Ford Mustang's initial appeal was not its monster power plant under the hood, but its classic design and sporty styling. Indeed, so successful was the Mustang that it is one of the best selling first-year cars ever. When Ford decided to put muscle under its Mustang hoods, it did so with models such as the Cobra Jet, the Mach 1 and the Boss. Under the hood, the Boss engine, assisted by better air-intake, boasted a powerful 429 cubic inch engine that generated an impressive 375 horsepower at 5600 rpm. On the track, it won the Trans-Am championship, with Pamelli Jones taking five victories and, in all, the Ford team winning half of the 1970 series races. With front and rear spoilers, a blacked-out grille, louver rear window and bold stripes, the 1970 Boss Mustang was a model that looked as fast on the street as it did on the track. This car remains one of the most coveted Mustang's of all time.
